The Accidental Computer Teacher
How I Became a Software Teacher
In 1998 on a rainy Saturday afternoon, I visited my local computer store, the Computer Café in Arlington, Massachusetts, to buy some supplies. When I walked into the store there were about six people sitting at computers waiting for an instructor to arrive to start a computer training class…
It became apparent that the instructor was running really late, so I asked the girl behind the counter if I could help by teaching students about the Internet until the teacher arrived. She said yes. So, I taught them about the Internet for about ten minutes and I had a blast. I loved it. I remember going home that afternoon and telling my wife that I think I had discovered a new career as a computer teacher. That’s how it all began, a computer instructor was late for class and that launched a new career for me.
Work With Me
You don’t need a full-time consultant to make lasting improvements. I work on short-term projects—by the day, week, month, or quarter—to help small businesses clean up databases, train staff, launch marketing campaigns, or build better sales systems. I can also step in as a salesperson to help generate commissions and get things moving. My focus is on creating practical solutions and building partnerships that lead to long-term growth.
My Experience
For more than 25 years, I’ve helped small businesses organize customer data, improve communication, and grow through better systems. I’m an Act Certified Consultant who believes technology should serve people, not frustrate them. My goal is to help clients stay organized, consistent, and connected while keeping things simple and practical.

Act Clever: CRM Consulting and Organization
Act CRM is at the center of how I help clients manage contacts, track sales, and stay organized. I help clean up and structure databases, define key contact types, and create systems that get used. The goal is to make Act CRM a living, working tool—not just a storage space for names.

Sales and Marketing Support Projects
Once your CRM is organized, I will help you put it to work. I set up Act Marketing Automation campaigns, write targeted messages, and show you how to interpret results—open rates, clicks, bounces, and opt-outs. I also teach you how to follow up effectively, keeping your outreach consistent and purposeful.
Video Training and Creative Production
Teaching is at the core of everything I do. I’ve created more than a thousand software training videos for my Teach an Old Dog New Tricks and Act CRM Tips YouTube channels. Using Camtasia Studio, I write, record, and produce short, clear lessons that help people learn technology quickly and confidently. My goal is always to make learning practical, direct, and easy to follow.
Website and Content Development
I design and maintain WordPress websites using Divi, helping small businesses create clean, modern, and effective online presences. I use Canva to develop graphics and visual ideas that tie everything together. My focus is on building websites that connect directly to your CRM and marketing tools, so your online presence supports how you do business.
Training for Groups and Individuals
I teach Act CRM, Microsoft Office, and QuickBooks to individuals and small teams. Each session is customized to match how people really work. My online classes are interactive, personal, and focused on helping people feel confident using the tools they rely on every day. I also create videos that compliment what I teach, and I can tailor them to fit your specific needs.

Business Experience and Perspective
Running my own consulting business for decades has shown me that organization and communication drive success. I enjoy working directly with decision-makers who value practical advice, efficiency, and creativity. My goal is always to help clients get organized, take action, and stay focused on what matters most.

Act Training
For more than twenty-five years I’ve helped small businesses get organized and use Act CRM to drive results. I focus on strategy as much as features, combining database cleanup & design, and Act Marketing Automation to create clear sales and follow-up routines. If you need someone who understands Act technically and knows how to turn it into a real system for staying organized and growing sales, that’s what I deliver.
Computer Training
I’ve spent decades teaching Microsoft Office, Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and general computing. My style is simple and practical, with real-world examples and no judgment. Whether you’re training new hires, refreshing a team, or looking for personal guidance, I make learning clear, comfortable, and efficient.
Content Creation
I’ve produced more than a thousand training videos, turning complex topics into short, useful lessons people can apply immediately. I can script, record, edit, and produce clear content that teaches, motivates, and builds trust. If you need practical videos or tutorials for customers or staff, I can create them quickly and professionally.
Web Design
I’ve built more than two dozen WordPress sites using Divi, focusing on clean layouts, simple navigation, and clear messaging. I enjoy shaping strong homepages and helping clients express what they do in a way that attracts the right audience. I blend technical know-how with practical strategy to create sites that look good, load fast, and communicate well.
Act Videos
My Act CRM channel features more than 750 videos covering everything from basics to advanced tools, database management, and marketing automation. It’s designed for people who want quick, clear answers without fluff. Many clients hire me after watching a few videos because they realize I explain Act in a way that’s easy to follow.

Creative Roots and Photography
I come from a family of artists. My parents, Jack and Nancy Holowitz, were award-winning photographers who built a respected business specializing in people and landscapes. Growing up around their work taught me about creativity, attention to detail, and visual storytelling—skills that shape how I teach and communicate today. You can view their photography at www.holowitz.com.

My Story Today
Mom & Dad: Photographers. My Wife is Very Smart. Three Sons. One Daughter-in-Law.Nancy & Jack’s studio was situated behind our home in Springfield, Massachusetts. I met my wife Hillary at UMASS Amherst and today we reside in Arlington MA, about 6 miles from Boston. We have three sons, and they are all college graduates. I must confess, I feel pretty good about that fact. Working from home, I was able to watch my sons while my wife helped people with Cancer at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute. In addition, she has a private practice helping women with fertility challenges. Did I mention how smart she is? She is a good person, loaded with empathy and good cheer, and she has a great ability to laugh with her patients. She finds the funny in everything, and her patients love her.
Family and Influence: Hillary Wright is Wicked Smart
The smartest person I know is my wife, Hillary Wright. Hillary is a nutritionist and registered dietitian who works part-time at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. She also runs a private practice focused on fertility nutrition and has written three books—one on PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome), one on prediabetes, and a recent collaboration on menopause with dietitian Elizabeth Ward. We’ve been married for many years, and she keeps me on my toes about health, balance, and good habits. I’ve learned that staying healthy is about consistency, not perfection.
Volunteering: New England Aquarium Boston
For four years, I volunteered one afternoon a week at the New England Aquarium in Boston as a visitor educator. I talked with people from all over the world about animals and exhibits, and it was one of the most rewarding experiences I’ve ever had. It was my way of giving back and getting to know the city that’s just five miles from home. When the pandemic arrived, my time there ended, but it reminded me how much I enjoy connecting with people through learning and conversation.

The Pan Mass Challenge: 1.1 Billion Dollars Raised (not a typo)
For the past 24 years, I’ve taken part in the Pan Mass Challenge, a two-day bike ride that raises money for cancer research at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston. Since it began, the event has raised nearly $1.1 billion thanks to more than 6,000 riders and thousands of volunteers. I’ve personally raised almost $130,000. The 160- to 190-mile ride keeps me motivated and active year-round—it’s an incredible reminder of what people can accomplish when they come together for a cause.

2025: My 24th PMC
In August of 2017, my brother-in-law Brian passed away from long-term complications related to his 16-year battle with cancer. Brian is the reason I started riding the Pan Mass Challenge (PMC) and he will continue to be my motivation as I ride in his memory in the future. We also lost his wife, Maryellen, to cancer in the early winter of 2023. Another good friend of mine is ill with cancer. I do it for her.
My PMC journey started in the summer of 2001. Brian was in the hospital in Boston, and I was on vacation with my wife and three children in Truro, Massachusetts. Truro is on Cape Cod about 5 miles before Provincetown. As we departed our vacation early on Sunday morning and drove up Route 6 heading towards Boston, we passed hundreds of Pan Mass Challenge riders as they cycled towards Provincetown to complete their two-day, 192-mile journey, raising money to fight cancer.
Life Outside of Work
Cooking is one of my favorite ways to relax and be creative. I grew up in a home where both my parents loved to cook, and I learned early on how food brings people together. When I’m in the kitchen, I’m usually thinking ahead to the next meal and how to make good use of leftovers. I cook most nights—it’s how I unwind. I also enjoy a good hoppy beer, occasional scotch, or a glass of red wine. And with Hillary being a dietitian, I’ve learned that moderation really is the key to everything.
Looking Ahead: I Want to Teach, Learn, and Create
As I think about how to give back in the next phase of my career, I keep coming back to teaching. My goal is to create short, practical training videos that help people between 50 and 100 feel more confident using technology. I believe learning software shouldn’t be intimidating, it should be clear, direct, and approachable.
I would love to work with AARP and any organization that helps people learn about technology—public libraries, adult education programs, and community groups that promote lifelong learning. From a business point of view, I can help by focusing on Microsoft Office training, since it covers so many essential skills that small businesses rely on every day. Teaching older adults how to use Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint effectively is one of the best ways I can continue to make a difference and share what I’ve learned from a lifetime of experience.
